Success In Plain Sight: Blanches Hideaway
When you’re ready to get away from it all, Burlington is the perfect place for a hideaway – Blanches Hideaway to be exact!
Perched at the top of central Newfoundland, with a tiny population of just 400, Burlington is a quiet town and the perfect spot for a vacation home for Natasha and Dean Kelly and their family. When they bought a bit more property in the area in 2022 it was their daughter who suggested they share their little piece of paradise with others by building a hotel and restaurant.
“Inspired by her suggestion, we made the decision to bring this vision to life, naming the establishment in honour of our beloved mother, as a lasting tribute to her memory,” Natasha says. “Blanches Hideaway is a family owned establishment that offers a unique experience that is both refreshing and exciting.”
The Suite Life
The family went on to build two suites, named Cove and Tickle, offering modern amenities you’d find in other vacation rentals, all right next door to a cafe serving local delicacies.
“Our team takes pride in providing excellent customer service, ensuring that every guest feels comfortable while enjoying their stay. “We specialize in home cooked meals, offering delicious options that will satisfy even the most discerning of palates,” Natasha says. “Our spacious accommodations are designed to make you feel right at home, with an ocean view that is sure to take your breath away.”
The whole community benefits from the cafe too, having access to great food, but also a venue rental for special events, weddings, as well as weekly in-house events like bingo games, paint nights, and movie nights.
“Blanches Hideaway is more than just a place to stay or grab a bite to eat - it's a community,” Dean says.
The whole family has gotten in on running the business, enjoying the independence and autonomy to steer the direction of the business, the couple agree.
“(It’s) the ability to bring our ideas to life, innovate, and create something unique in the market,” Natasha says. “Making a positive impact on our customers, employees, and community is very fulfilling.”
Checking In
Of course, it’s also a lot of hard work, but it’s worth it to show off the beauty and experience of small town Newfoundland.
“By establishing our business in the heart of our community, we inspire and support other local businesses to thrive and achieve success,” Dean says.
Starting the business required a significant amount of capital and for that the Kellys reached out to CBDC Emerald who helped not only with access to low-interest start-up loans, but also access to learning opportunities and hands-on guidance.
“Thanks to the invaluable support from CBDC, our dream has become a reality,” Natasha says. “We are truly grateful for the tremendous value that CBDC provides to small businesses in Newfoundland.”
If you’re looking to learn about creating a business to support economic growth in your community, while also taking charge of your future, the Kellys recommend getting in touch with a local CBDC office and a business advisor. CBDCs throughout the province offer a variety of programs from management training to repayable loans with low interest rates. Get in touch with your CBDC to find out how!
