House and Home: Food Culture Place
A passion for celebrating and sharing Newfoundland and Labrador – its natural landscape, rich culture, and wild-foraged food – has become a unique experiential tourism business and legacy for Lori McCarthy.
Food Culture Place was launched in 2012 in Mobile, Newfoundland with the goal of celebrating the resilience and resourcefulness of the local people, heritage and history, and especially the natural foods and resources from the land. Lori has built a business which has made her an advocate, educator, and public speaker.
Lori is a skilled chef and outdoorswoman, who offers experiences to tourists and locals alike; from foraging, fishing, and cooking, to traditional Newfoundland handicrafts and experiences. Food Culture Place offers workshops, hosts cultural and artist residency programs, and other immersive experiences, customized for individuals or groups.
Wild Food, Craft, and Connection
“(Food Culture Place) came from my desire for travellers to explore a different side of who we are and our culture. It was created for people to leave Newfoundland with a better understanding of who we are,” Lori says. “It was designed to keep our culture close to our hearts so that it’s here for the next generation.”
Since launching, Food Culture Place has been featured in international press, including on CNN and National Geographic, as well as national media including the Globe and Mail, CBC, and the National Post.
“Small business is at the heart of who we are as a culture. It’s part of the tapestry we are as a people and community,” Lori says, explaining how she incorporates local fishermen, farmers, and hunters into the experiences she curates. “I share the stories and invite people to come and share theirs when guests are here. We eat at local restaurants, use local business as part of our residencies.”
A Bounty of Adventure
As Food Culture Place isn’t a traditional business, it was important for Lori to think of non-traditional solutions to launching and operating. She approached CBDC Celtic for Business Training & Counselling.
“CBDC has changed how I do my work and run my business,” Lori says. “Through the programming offered, I have been able to take over my own bookkeeping, saving me money and also enabling me to grow and redesign the business based on good decision making.”
Lori recommends anyone looking to grow a successful business take advantage of the opportunities available through programs like those offered by CBDCs throughout the province. When you’re ready to turn an unconventional idea into a thriving business, get in touch with your local CBDC to learn about programs and low-interest, flexible loans you can use to get started.
