When Sonya and Jason Frost looked to buy Boliver Service Centre in Digby in 2014 as part of their family’s succession plan, they found little support among bank lenders.

Things were going fine for Michael Enslow, but he knew things could go even better. After working as a deck hand, he bought his own lobster license and inshore boat, the 35-foot Freda and Sons II. To finance the purchase, he approached Ardith Van Buskirk at CBDC in Shelburne.

Kimberley Dunphy is the sole owner and operator of KMD DESIGNS located at 193 Water Street in Carbonear, Newfoundland. KMD DESIGN started in 2015 as a home-based business where she first sold her products on Facebook and Instagram.

Michael and Teena Piercey started their own auto repair company in Winterton in 2006 and they became incorporated as Mike’s Auto Repair Inc. in 2007.  They received support from the province to purchase the building and land on which the business operates and also to purchase a tow truck. 

Starting up my own business has always been a plan in my mind, whether I knew it or not. I always had a gut feeling that I would be my own boss. The reality of this choice is without question - endless extra hours, finding and keeping the right staff and plenty of stressful days.

Geoff Orendorff moved to central Newfoundland from Ontario and wasted no time joining the only white water rafting company on the island – Rafting NL. Geoff always knew he wanted to pursue a career in outdoor tourism.

Long haul trucking is not a job for everyone, but for Brian (à Joe) Comeau, it’s in his blood. A welder by trade, Brian’s dream was to own his own truck as a long haul driver.  After sustaining an injury in December 2014, Mr. Comeau was unable to do any sort of physical activity for 5 months.

In the spring of 2010 Terry Tucker of Makinsons was employed full time as a mechanic at a local garage in Conception Bay.  He approached CBDC to discuss financing options for him to purchase a tow truck to provide roadside assistance in his spare time.  He hired a part-time driver to help him fil

Wendy Smith opened Glass Artisans Studio & Gallery on the Cabot Trail - Cape Breton Island in 2005. Over the years CBDC Northside Victoria has helped her expand her shop twice. “They really understand the needs of small businesses,” says Smith.

In 2008, award-winning home beer brewer Randy Lawrence decided to turn his hobby into a full time business.

“I turned a hobby into a profession and now it’s taking off like wildfire, the craft beer industry,” Lawrence said. 

For a new company, the leap from vision to reality is often fraught with difficulty, but an extended hand can help bridge the gap.

After working in the consumer electronics industry for over 15 years, Stephen Payne decided the timing was right to strike out on his own. In October 2015 he opened Colchester Phone Repair Inc.

Meet Kris from “Kris’ Kustoms”, an auto body and custom paint & design shop located in Channel- Port aux Basques on the west coast of Newfoundland. Kris took a general business loan from CBDC and started his home based business in September of 2014.

Robbin’s Donuts brought drive through food service to the Southern Shore when they opened their doors in 2015. The new food venue allows commuters from the shore to have their brew in their car before getting to Goulds.

A lot has changed for Royal Propane since its roots as a two-person operation. The company now employs 10 people from the Digby area, including the Bent’s two grown children, their partners and even a nephew. “It’s a family affair to be sure,” says Susan.

The opportunity presented itself in 2010. Needing a life change, Bevaart decided to leave Ontario and establish roots in a new place. “I found this property in Brighton on the Internet—and fell head over heels in love. It had everything I was looking for to support my dream,” he says. 

Art & Debbie Ryan run an outfitting business where they give customers the perfect fishing and hunting experience in western Newfoundland. Mountain Top Outfitters has over 43 years of experience with seven hunting and fishing lodges.

“We have an ongoing list,” Michelle states.  Whenever a customer asks for something we try to carry it, within reason.”

Beverly and Wade Matthews from Grand Bank started their business K & K Home Styling Ltd. after deciding they wanted to give working for themselves a try! They took advantage of the CBDC General Business Loan program with Beverly operating The Paint Shop & the Cape View Efficiency Unit.
