Empowering Young Entrepreneurs: The JuniorPreneurs Pilot Project at CBDC Shelburne
This summer, CBDC Shelburne proudly launched the JuniorPreneurs Pilot Project, a hands-on initiative designed to ignite entrepreneurial spirit in youth aged 14 and under. With three enthusiastic participants, the program offered a unique opportunity for young minds to explore the world of small business ownership through real-world experience and mentorship.
Participants were invited to develop a business idea, craft a business plan, and meet with a loans officer, accompanied by a parent or guardian, to discuss their proposal. Each young entrepreneur was responsible for researching supply costs, budgeting, and submitting a signed business plan. Upon approval, they received a project advancement of $150–$170, distributed in one lump sum payment to support their startup efforts, where the participants made biweekly payments towards their loans. The participants were presented with a letter of offer that both the participant and the parent or guardian signed of commitment to the project.
The goal of the project was to instill key business skills such as budgeting, sourcing supplies, and taking ownership of a venture. Importantly, the advancement funds were returned to the participants after they presented to our board, a surprise reward for their dedication and learning.
Our JuniorPreneurs included:
Jackson Foley with Jackson’s Muscle Dogs
Jaxon Young with Lakeside Treats
Serenity Zwicker with Serenity’s Super Awesome Snacks
Each participant received support from their parents and demonstrated impressive initiative. Notably, one entrepreneur has already repaid their project funding in full. A testament to their commitment and success.
Recently, the young business owners shared their experiences, challenges, and accomplishments with the CBDC Shelburne board. They reflected on what they learned, whether they made a profit, and how the journey shaped their understanding of entrepreneurship.
The JuniorPreneurs Pilot Project has proven to be a meaningful step in nurturing the next generation of business leaders, one small venture at a time.
