Cultural Exchange: The Hutch
The changing face of business ownership in Newfoundland and Labrador has brought more than just new opportunities to the province - it’s brought new cultures too!
The Hutch is a convenience store in Mobile on Newfoundland’s southern shore, and for more than 25 years offered basic groceries, a provincial liquor outlet, lottery, and household goods – and now it’s also offering a taste of Bangladesh!
When the original owners of The Hutch were retiring in 2024, they approached Hasan Zahidul Islam and suggested taking over the operation. Hasan was a newcomer to the province through the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) and was interested, but wasn’t sure where to start.
New Kid on the Block
The owners of The Hutch reached out to CBDC Celtic to learn about programs to support Hasan taking over the business. They learned about the Newcomer Loan Program and discovered it would be perfect for their transition.
“The program has given me cash flow-which is very beneficial. It is also establishing my credit in Newfoundland. Both are extremely important to assist in running a business,” Hasan says. “There is no bank or government funding for temporary residents.“
The Newcomer Loan Program offers small, repayable loans to start a new business or purchase an existing one. The term of the loan can also be as long as 10 years, allowing newcomers to really build their business without being financially stressed.
“The experience has been excellent. I know I can reach out and ask for support anytime,” he says.
In Good Taste
Today, Hasan and his family have become part of the community of Mobile.
“I enjoy meeting people. The customers are very friendly,” Hasan says. “I kept all the staff and hired new staff. Customers can drop by and purchase locally, which saves time and money if they go to the city.
“I also enjoy adding my own culture to the business.”
Hasan has expanded the business with a Bangladeshi lunch takeaway, letting residents get a taste of his home. Orders come flying in daily for traditional dishes like beef biryani, daal, lemon butter rice, butter chicken, and even tuna masala, all sold alongside the traditional staples of homemade bread and cookies and cakes the shop has always offered.
If you’re new to Newfoundland and Labrador and are looking for support in finding your dream business, get in touch with a business advisor at any of the province’s CBDCs and discover a range of programs which can help you succeed.
