Nailed It! Jo’s Nail Salon
Beauty services have always been about making you feel great, but when Josephine Walsh started her second career as owner and operator of Jo’s Nail Salon, she says she’s the one who benefits from serving her clients!
Started as a home business in the fall of 2023, Josephine opened her Brigus South doors to people looking to add a little sparkle to their days. She offers gel nails and tips, regular manicures and pedicures, and is learning acrylic style nails to add to her offerings.
“I always wanted to have my own business and since I have always expressed an interest in doing nails I decided to do a course at Professional Beauty (Supplies),” she says “I am constantly learning new ways as I take every course that’s offered. After I retired I found that I had more time to pursue my own business.”
Filed and Polished
As much as Josephine loves learning and her clients love how she’s only a short drive away, rather than visiting salons in the city, it’s really the social aspects of the work that brings the most joy.
“My favourite part is meeting with people and seeing them enjoy their nails,” she says. “Also it’s like a social, as we have a cup of tea and a chat.”
Working from home has allowed Josephine flexibility, the chance to make decisions about her own future, and the work is also a creative outlet.
“I like … my business. I would certainly like to be busier than I am, but I like to provide a service to my clients that is affordable to them.”
Tough as Nails
Starting Jo’s Nail Salon didn’t require a significant capital investment, but it did require time. Time to learn, time to set up, and time to develop a client base. Having an income during that time was key for Josephine. She says it was CBDC Celtic who allowed her the space to develop and execute her business plans.
“CBDC has provided me with SEA. This money every week has allowed me to stay home and work on my business without having to go out and find work,” Josephine says.
The Self-Employment Assistance (SEA) Program is one of CBDC’s most popular programs and provides the opportunity to make an income while working on the development of a business. If you have a business idea you know will take time to launch, get in touch with your local CBDC and find out more about the programs available to you.
