What do you get when you combine hundreds of live tropical butterflies, a colony of honeybees, and a refurbished dairy barn? You get the world-class Newfoundland Insectarium, the only privately owned insectarium in North America. Voted the #1 museum to see in Newfoundland and Labrador by TripAdvisor Canada in 2014, this unique tourist attraction opened in Reidville in 1998 and today, features three floors of live and mounted insects and arachnids from around the world.
With 22,000 to 26,000 annual visitors, 9 staff, and a season that runs from Victoria Day to Thanksgiving, the Newfoundland Insectarium is owned and operated by husband and wife team, Lloyd and Sandy Hollett. Working every day for 5 straight months, the Holletts upgrade the Insectarium regularly to compete with the larger museums in the province. Luckily, they have a secret weapon — their most popular exhibit, a 92” butterfly garden features 45 species of free-flying tropical butterflies offering a magical experience for customers of all ages.
CBDC Humber clients since they opened, the Holletts continue to rely on the organisation’s services as needed. Lloyd Hollett appreciates the local, community-based nature of CBDC Humber. “They’re great to work with. They’re approachable and take a lot of interest in their clients,” he said of CDBC Humber staff.
Future plans include continued upgrades with the possible addition of another butterfly greenhouse for a commercial butterfly release initiative. Whatever the development, Lloyd and Sandy Hollett are committed to serving people. “It’s all about the people; from everyday people to celebrities and people with all levels of ability – we’d never want to give it up!”
