With a long history of being a people person, Colleen Spencer grew up working in a convenience store that was attached to the family home. Today, as Owner/Operator of Colleen’s Gift Shoppe, she prides herself on offering unique and affordable giftware, home décor, souvenirs and crafts at her one-of-a-kind store.

In the current competitive economy where big box stores are becoming the norm and consumers have access to a wealth of in-store and online shopping options, Colleen is well aware of the value of impeccable customer service. “My number one goal,” she said, “is to ensure that each person who walks through my door is acknowledged, welcomed and helped.” She actually remembers her first customer: “My doors were not yet open for business, but this lady was outside so I welcomed her inside. She is still one of my customers!”

Thanks to this attention to detail, the ceaseless encouragement of CBDC staff and the CBDC One-Year Self-Employment Program, Colleen’s Gift Shoppe now has two employees and a satisfied customer base that is increasing steadily. “CBDC is there for you, to see that you are successful in business. They often extend invitations to various workshops that are extremely beneficial to you and your business,” Colleen said.
