Greene-Lynch Landscaping
David had a diploma in Environmental Horticulture and had worked for landscaping companies for experience while attending school. One employer was Paul MacPhee, president of Landscape Nova Scotia. At MacPhee’s landscaping company he gained four years of valuable experience. During that time he also took the Landscape Industry Certified Exam to become a Landscape Industry Certified Technician (CLT). With that designation, David felt he was ready to go into business for himself.
David has a desire to help create jobs for people to encourage them to either move to or stay in the Sherbrooke area. Currently he works fulltime and employs his wife, as bookkeeper and labourer, along with two students in the summer.
Greene-Lynch Landscaping offers many services: snow removal; lawn maintenance; landscape installations (installing flower beds and sods, making brick retaining walls, paver patios and walkways, flagstone paths, planting plants and trees, etc.); and consultations and landscape design. The company is now getting into ordering plants, soils, and mulch, and delivering them.
There are not many businesses around like Greene-Lynch. What really sets them apart from the few there are is David’s training. There are no other businesses with a CLT on staff in the Sherbrooke and Antigonish areas.
David is happy with his new venture, “It’s amazing…I’ve actually started my own company and we have had early success. I've acquired more equipment and hired more employees in our first year than anyone thought possible, because of how much business we have attracted already.”
CBDC Guysborough County helped David with his business plan, and then provided financial support and training. David participated in the Self Employment Benefit program (SEB) last year. The SEB program allows qualifying participants 40 weeks of Financial Assistance while they start their business. The SEB program is sponsored by Employment Nova Scotia and administered by the CBDC.
“They help out with anything on the business side of things, where I am not as well prepared. The CBDC staff is friendly and helpful and will do anything they can if you are willing to put in your own time and effort at starting the business.”
