Hudson's Honeyberries
Darrell & Yvonne Hudson first heard of the Haskap berry when the berry itself was introduced in Canada. At that time they were enthralled in raising their last child and were both working fulltime. Although they had thirteen acres of property, there was no time to think about anything other than getting through their busy days and nights. But they knew someday they would be earning a living off their land... they just didn't know how. About five years ago, Darrell started showing signs of fibromyalgia, an illness that is not fully understood yet but can be very painful. Darrell stopped working full time until he could make sense of what was happening to his body. During this time, he started to read about the Haskap berry and was amazed with the incredible health qualities and the many benefits to growers. He learned how healthy these vitamin berries are and they were both amazed at how easy they are to take care of. So they decided to buy some Haskap plants. There was only one problem however, they didn't have any money. They reached out to CBDC and were welcomed with open arms. CBDC lent them $10,000 and they bought truckloads of Haskap plants from a Nova Scotia supplier, along with other gardening tools and items they would need to run their business. They set up at two farmers markets (Musquodoboit Farmers Market in Musquodoboit Harbour and Funky Farmgate Market in Enfield) where they sold Haskap plants and perennials during planting season. Each time they sold a plant, it allowed them to plant two in the field ... they now have over 1,300 Haskap plants planted firmly in the ground! During Darrell's research on the Haskap berry, he found out that most berries that are grown in Nova Scotia are shipped to Japan or other parts of the world, and that leaves Nova Scotians with no access to economically-priced berries or their products. They decided that this was not fair and that all the people of our province deserve to have access to these berries ... that led them to open part of their Haskap field as a U-pick. They had a lot of interest this year, their very first, and people are very excited to see this delicious and healthy product at prices they can afford.
