Success Stories

The Sewing RoomThe Sewing Room
Ms. Sarah Kilfoy and Ms. Millicent Hooper were always interested in sewing. At first, sewing became a hobby for the two sisters. Then in 1996, Millicent decided to take her hobby a step further and enrolled in a two-year Textile Production course. After completing this course Millicent and Sarah both realized that they wanted to start their own business and turn their hobby into their living. It wasn’t until July 2004 that they opened a small part-time business right out of their own home. They were doing well but they knew that if they wanted to improve their business and expand, they would have to operate out of a location that allowed them to see more customers and a place where they could operate full time.

They developed a partnership in July of 2005 and shortly after, approached the CBDC for assistance. With the help of the Self-Employment Benefits Program and the SEED Capital Loans Program, they were able to start a full time business and relocate to the Marystown Mall. They named their business The Sewing Room. During this process, they also took advantage of the training funds provided by the SEED Program and were able to obtain assistance from a local accountant in enhancing their accounting/bookkeeping knowledge.

Since relocating, their customer base has increased and they are doing very well. The Sewing Room not only offers repairs and alterations, but they provide tailoring and custom drapery as well. For more information, contact (709) 279-7666. Together, Ms. Hooper and Ms. Kilfoy are sewing the seeds of success.
