Genoa Design International Ltd.
In 1995, the concept of Genoa Design was born. Mr. Leonard Pecore was its founder, who, armed with a Diploma of Technology in Naval Architecture and ten years of navy experience, began working from his home in Conception Bay South as a consulting naval architect.
Within a few years, the business was landing long distance contracts and began taking a more international direction. Enter Darren Letto. A former classmate and old boot camp buddy of Leonard’s, Darren joined the team, anteing up a badly needed investment and front-line shipyard experience. The new partners, with funding support from federal and provincial agencies, including CBDC Cabot, aggressively elbowed their way into the U.S. market. Genoa Design International Ltd. steadily gained a foothold with shipbuilding and offshore firms across the United States and Canada for quality detail production design and drafting and 3D modeling. Recently, Genoa has also expanded into the European market.
From military vessels to towboats and oil tanker barges, Genoa’s work has earned a second-to-none reputation. With 25 people now on staff, Genoa is in the enviable position of racing to keep up with demand. The owners say the edge comes from hiring top Marine Institute graduates (recognized across North America as the best in the business); setting higher standards than the competitors; and continually looking for ways to add value both in-house and to clients. Genoa’s lean manufacturing expertise and other ship production innovative strategies have enabled the company to continuously rank among the best in the North American ship building industry.
Genoa’s most notable projects include: New York City’s Staten Island Ferries, an icebreaker for the U.S. Coastguard, a Littoral Combat Ship for the U.S. military, ocean-going tug barges, offshore supply vessels, harbor tugs, tractor tugs, towboats, oil tanker barges, fishing vessels, catamarans and various offshore structures.
