What Does A Doula Do?
The word ‘doula’ (pronounced doo-la) is new to most people, but Laurie Brannen from Stoney Island is doing her best to make it become a household word. It’s Greek, meaning "woman who serves".
Today, doula describes a woman who is experienced and trained to provide support during pregnancy, labour and birth. This is a good thing because studies show that women supported by a doula have fewer Caesarean sections and shorter labour. They also have a greater satisfaction in their birth experience says Brannen, a certified doula and member of the Childbirth and Postpartum Professional Association of Canada. Before deciding to be a doula and starting "Baby Steps Doula Services", the perky 44 year old grandmother already knew a lot about the birthing process having accompanied 16 friends and relatives to the delivery room! So this is a natural fit for her, and it was made possible through CBDC. "I had no clue about setting up a business. Their financial help and assistance has been priceless. They have all the answers for you even before you ask them.
