Have you thought about succession planning for your business? – January 12, 2009
Have you thought about succession planning for your business?
One of the major challenges facing Atlantic Canadian businesses is succession planning. According to the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB), small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) account for 85 percent of Canadian businesses and only one‐third of SMEs are currently planning for business succession.
In an effort to assist Atlantic Canadian business owners with succession planning, the Atlantic CBDCs have embarked on a new initiative, the Atlantic Canada Small Business Expatriate Campaign. The campaign is premised on the belief that there are people that have left Atlantic Canada over the past decades and now have a desire to return to Atlantic Canada.
The campaign consists of the following four components:
1. Awareness Campaign
Distribution of an unaddressed ad card to be drop‐shipped via Canada Post to all households in the Fort McMurray, Alberta area Newspaper and radio ads purchased in advance of the information sessions, promoting the event
2. Succession Planning Database
Development of a web‐based application to showcase businesses and future Atlantic Canadian businesses for sale online
3. Information Session
Two‐day public information forum will be held in Fort McMurray, Alberta coordinated by provincial and Atlantic Association staff to meet with individuals interested in buying a business or in starting a new venture in rural Atlantic Canada
4. Monitoring and measurement
Measurement of the results achieved and lessons learned
